Team-Based Learning

Active and Experiential Learning Strategies

Team based learning is a collaborative instructional strategy developed by Larry Michaelsen at the University of Oklahoma during the 1970s, originally for medical education, that organizes a course around a repeating three phase cycle. Students first complete preparatory work such as readings or recorded lectures on their own, then take a readiness assurance test individually and again immediately afterward as a team on the same questions, with both scores counting toward the course grade, and finally work in their teams on application focused exercises that require them to use the material to solve problems, present their answers and discuss them under the instructor's guidance. An optional peer evaluation component is often added partway through or at the end of a course, and the method is now used by the large majority of medical schools in the United States as well as in corporate training.
