Design Thinking in Education

Active and Experiential Learning Strategies

Design thinking in education adapts the design-thinking process developed at Stanford University's d.school and the design firm IDEO, empathizing with a real user's needs, defining a problem, generating many possible solutions, building a prototype, and testing it with users, into a classroom method for open-ended, student-driven project work, most often applied to problems with a real audience outside the classroom rather than a predetermined correct answer. It has been adopted particularly in project-based STEM and entrepreneurship programs from the 2010s onward.
