Service-learning is an instructional approach that combines meaningful community service with structured academic reflection, so that a project such as tutoring younger students, restoring a wetland or assisting at a food bank is paired with course content and guided reflection connecting the experience back to what students are meant to learn, rather than treated as volunteer work separate from the curriculum. It grew from experiential-education roots through the 1970s and 1980s and is now embedded in secondary and higher-education curricula in many countries, sometimes as a graduation requirement.
