Lifewide Learning

Adult and Lifelong Learning Theories

Lifewide learning is an approach to education that adds to classroom instruction by using real settings and situations to cover kinds of learning that formal schooling does not usually reach. It treats a persons development as happening across several parts of life at once, including work, family, community involvement, leisure and personal wellbeing, rather than seeing learning as confined to schools and colleges. The idea complements lifelong learning, which describes learning along the path of a persons life over time, by adding a spatial dimension, learning that happens at the same time across different areas of life rather than only over the years. The approach began in higher education at the University of Surrey in England and has since become a focus of education policy in Hong Kong, on the view that tying these varied experiences together with formal education supports fuller personal development and keeps people engaged with learning throughout their lives.
