FAQs

Was IELTS started in 1980 or in 1989?

Launched in 1980 as ELTS; the international partnership that runs it was formed in 1989.

Both dates belong to its history. IELTS was originally launched in 1980 under the shorter name ELTS. It expanded rapidly to help people worldwide from 1989, when the IELTS international partnership was formed. The test is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press and Assessment.
