National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)

Assessment Practice

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand's main secondary school qualification, awarded at three progressive levels typically corresponding to the final three years of secondary school, introduced from 2002 to replace the previous School Certificate, Sixth Form Certificate and Bursary examinations. Students accumulate credits from internally and externally assessed standards across a range of subjects, and a defined mix of credits at each level is required to be awarded that level of the certificate.

FAQs

Do Merit and Excellence grades change an NCEA certificate?

Yes. With 50 credits at Merit or Excellence the certificate itself is endorsed.

Higher grades do not earn extra credits, but they are still recorded. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority says a student who gets enough credits at Merit or Excellence, 50 to be exact, has Merit or Excellence included in the NCEA qualification, a mark called Certificate Endorsement.
