The Exame Nacional do Ensino Medio (ENEM), or National High School Exam, is a standardized examination created by the Brazilian government in 1998 to assess the knowledge of students completing secondary education. Since 2009, ENEM has increasingly been used as an admissions instrument for Brazilian public universities through the national Sistema de Selecao Unificada (Sisu), reducing reliance on the separate vestibular examinations previously administered by individual institutions.

Who can take the ENEM and what is a treineiro?
Anyone finishing or having finished upper secondary school can sit it; earlier students sit as treineiros for self-assessment only.
Anyone who has already finished upper secondary school, or is finishing it, can sit the ENEM to seek access to higher education. A student who has not yet completed that stage may still take the exam as a treineiro, a trainee test taker. A treineiro result serves only as a self-assessment of knowledge and is not used for admission.

Os participantes que ainda não concluíram o ensino médio podem participar como “treineiros” e seus resultados no exame servem somente para autoavaliação de conhecimentos.
