Student centered learning, also called learner centered education, is an approach to teaching that shifts the focus of instruction from the teacher to the student, aiming to build learner autonomy and the skills needed for self directed, lifelong learning. Students take an active role in deciding what they learn, how quickly they move through material and how they demonstrate their understanding, while the teacher acts as a facilitator who helps students construct their own meaning rather than as the primary source of information. This contrasts with a traditional, teacher centered classroom, where the instructor chooses the content, methods and assessment criteria for every student in the same way. The approach draws on constructivist learning theory's emphasis on the learner's own role in building meaning from new information and prior experience, and it explicitly recognizes that individual students differ in their interests, abilities and preferred ways of learning.
