Institución Libre de Enseñanza

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

The Institucion Libre de Ensenanza, Spanish for Free Teaching Institution, was a pedagogical project active in Spain from 1876 to 1939, founded by a group of professors who had been removed from the Central University of Madrid for defending academic freedom and refusing to conform their teaching to official religious, political or moral dogma. Inspired by the Krausist philosophy that Julian Sanz del Rio had introduced at the same university, the founders, including Francisco Giner de los Rios, built a secular private alternative that began with university-level instruction and later extended to primary and secondary education. It had a significant impact on Spanish intellectual life, drawing the support of figures such as Joaquin Costa, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Antonio Machado and Santiago Ramon y Cajal, who backed its work of educational, cultural and social renewal.
