Critical pedagogy, founded on Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, written 1967 to 1968, critiques traditional schooling as a banking model in which teachers deposit knowledge into passive students. Freire proposed instead a dialogical, problem-posing education in which teacher and student investigate together, aimed at developing critical consciousness, conscientizacao, of the social and political forces shaping one's life. Among the most cited works in the social sciences, the book was banned under several dictatorships and remains politically contested, drawing feminist critique of its original language, which Freire revised, and conservative objections to its politics.
