Critical Consciousness

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

Critical consciousness, also called conscientization or, in Freire's own Portuguese, conscientizacao, is an educational and social concept developed by the Brazilian pedagogue and educational theorist Paulo Freire, grounded in neo-Marxist critical theory. It centers on achieving an in-depth understanding of the world that allows a person to perceive and expose the social and political contradictions shaping their own life, and it extends beyond understanding alone to include taking action against the oppressive elements that understanding reveals. In education, critical consciousness names the awareness that Freire's own problem-posing method and critical pedagogy are meant to cultivate in a learner, rather than a separate teaching technique in its own right.

FAQs

Is critical consciousness only about understanding oppression, or does it involve action too?

No. It also includes taking action against the oppressive elements that the understanding reveals.

It involves action as well as understanding. Critical consciousness centers on achieving an in-depth understanding of the world that lets a person perceive and expose social and political contradictions. The concept also includes taking action against the oppressive elements in one's own life that this understanding illuminates. Understanding alone is therefore only part of what the term names.
