Teacher's Oath

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

A Teacher's Oath is a formal pledge taken by educators in some countries, setting out professional commitments and standards of conduct for the profession. The modern form traces to the Socratic Oath, designed in 1993 by German educator Hartmut von Hentig, which asks teachers to respect each child's uniqueness, protect their physical and mental integrity, take their feelings seriously, challenge their gifts, and prepare them for responsibility in the community. Similar oaths exist under different names in several countries, including the Comenius Oath in Finland, Teachers' Oath Taking in the Philippines, the Abdul Kalam Teachers Oath in India, the Teachers Pledge in Singapore, and Betimi i Mesuesit in Kosovo. In the United States, most states at one time required teachers to swear a loyalty oath, a practice dating to 1863, with Massachusetts requiring one from 1935 to 1967. A 2022 revision by Klaus Zierer extended the Socratic Oath with explicit commitments to parents, colleagues, the wider educational public, and democratic society. FAQs

Do teachers in the United States take an oath?

Many US states have adopted teacher loyalty oaths since 1863.

Teachers in the United States have been asked to swear loyalty oaths rather than the professional pledges found elsewhere. Since 1863, nearly two-thirds of US states have adopted loyalty oaths for teachers. One example is the Massachusetts Teachers' Oath, a loyalty oath required to teach in Massachusetts from 1935 to 1967.
