Guy Brousseau (1933 to 2024) was a French mathematics educationalist, born in Taza, Morocco. He began as a primary school teacher in 1953 before joining the University of Bordeaux, and went on to found COREM, the Centre for Observation and Research on Mathematics Teaching, which he ran from 1973 to 1998 at the Jules Michelet elementary school in Talence, and later the LADIST laboratory that supported it. His main theoretical contribution is the theory of didactic situations, begun in the early 1970s, which together with Gerard Vergnaud's conceptual field theory and Yves Chevallard's anthropological theory of didactics forms one of the three main frameworks of the French school of mathematics didactics. His research covered the teaching of natural and decimal numbers, probability, statistics, geometry, elementary algebra, logic and reasoning. In 2003 he received the first Felix Klein Medal from the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction.
