Robert J. Mislevy

Robert J. Mislevy (1950 to 2025) was an American academic and psychometrician known for his contributions to educational measurement and psychometrics. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate in methodology of behavioral research from the University of Chicago in 1981, worked at the National Opinion Research Center and then at Educational Testing Service from 1984, joined the University of Maryland as professor of measurement, statistics and evaluation in 2001, and from 2011 to 2021 held the Frederic M. Lord Chair in Measurement and Statistics at Educational Testing Service. He led the scholars who shaped Evidence Centered Design, a meta-framework that has informed the development of many large scale standardized assessments and gave rise to the broader principled assessment design movement, and he wrote Sociocognitive Foundations of Educational Measurement. He was a past president of the Psychometric Society and a member of the National Academy of Education.
