Ronald R. Edmonds (1935-1983) was an American educator and researcher who pioneered the effective schools movement. Responding to the 1966 Coleman Report's finding that family background predicted student outcomes more than schooling did, Edmonds developed a five-factor model of school effectiveness, showing that schools serving low-income students could achieve strong outcomes when they combined strong instructional leadership, high expectations for all students, an orderly climate, an emphasis on basic skills and frequent monitoring of pupil progress.
