American educator (1931-2019) who engineered Direct Instruction, a rigorously scripted, explicit teaching method built from carefully sequenced examples. Working with psychologist Carl Bereiter, he began the work as a research associate at the University of Illinois in 1964; the formal DISTAR model was developed with Wesley C. Becker and first implemented at the University of Illinois in the mid-1960s, then carried forward at the University of Oregon from 1970, where Engelmann became a professor of education.
