American educator and the William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia's School of Education and Human Development. After 21 years teaching public school, Tomlinson coined the phrase 'differentiated instruction' and, with colleagues at the University of Virginia, built the research base for structuring lessons around a student's readiness, interest and preferred means of learning.
