Equity and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Equity and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy groups approaches that center a student's own culture, identity or democratic voice as the starting point for instruction, separate from a general learning paradigm or a pacing and assessment design. Belongs here: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, which treats a student's own culture as a strength to build instruction on; Multicultural Education, which provides students with knowledge about the histories and contributions of diverse groups; and Democratic Education, which organizes a school so students hold an equal vote alongside staff in setting its own rules. Does not belong here: a psychological learning paradigm such as Humanism, grouped under Learning Theory Paradigms, and a philosophy of education such as Liberationism, grouped under Philosophies of Education, even where both share this group's concern with power, voice and inclusion.
