American education scholar, Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who developed and popularized the framework of culturally relevant pedagogy. Her 1995 article 'Toward a Theory of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy' argued that instruction should treat a student's own culture as a strength to build on rather than something to assimilate away, pursuing academic success, cultural competence and critical consciousness together.
