Kevin Kumashiro

Kevin Kumashiro is an education scholar and the former dean of the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. He was previously a professor of Asian American Studies and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is the immediate past president of the National Association for Multicultural Education. He received his doctorate in educational policy studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000, the year he published the influential article Toward a Theory of Anti-Oppressive Education, and he was founding director of the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education, which closed in 2017. His work holds that many traditional and commonsense ways of doing or reforming education can contribute to oppression in schools and society, and he urges educators to question what they take for granted, for example the assumption that high standardized test scores necessarily mean students are being properly taught and are properly learning.
