Skill Acquisition Models

A model describing the stages a person passes through while acquiring a practical skill or applying learning in a new setting, rather than a theory of general cognition or language: the Dreyfus model and the four stages of competence, both describing the path from novice to expert; shuhari, the Japanese account of mastery moving from following the rules to transcending them; the learning curve and the plateau effect, describing the pace and stalling of skill improvement over practice; and transfer of learning and transfer of training, describing whether a skill learned in one context carries over to another.
