Brown University is a private Ivy League research university on College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, founded in 1764 as one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution, making it the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. It was the first American college to codify that admission and instruction of students was to be equal regardless of religious affiliation, and since 1969 it has operated an Open Curriculum with no mandatory general education distribution requirements. Brown comprises the College, a Graduate School, the Alpert Medical School, and schools of engineering and public health, and it houses the oldest applied mathematics program in the country and the oldest engineering program in the Ivy League.
