The Jagiellonian University is a public research university in Krakow, Poland, founded in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great. It is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in continuous operation in the world, and its campus forms part of the Krakow Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of thirteen main faculties plus the Collegium Medicum, employs roughly 4,000 academics, and educates more than 35,000 students across 166 fields, mostly in Polish though some 30 degrees are offered in English. Its alumni include the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, King John III Sobieski, Pope John Paul II, and four Nobel laureates in literature: Ivo Andric and Wislawa Szymborska, who studied there, and Czeslaw Milosz and Olga Tokarczuk, who taught there.
