William Marsh Rice University, generally known as Rice University, is a private research university in Houston, Texas, established on September 23, 1912, funded from the estate of Massachusetts businessman William Marsh Rice following his death. Its founding motto, Letters, Science, Art, still describes the range of its eight constituent schools, covering architecture, business, engineering, humanities, music, natural sciences and social sciences on a 300-acre campus in Houston's museum district. Rice joined the Association of American Universities in 1985, is classified as an R1 doctoral university with very high research activity, enrolls about 8,880 students, and holds an endowment of 8.07 billion dollars as of fiscal year 2024.
