The University of Notre Dame du Lac, generally known as the University of Notre Dame, is a private Catholic research university in Notre Dame, Indiana, established on November 26, 1842 by members of the Congregation of Holy Cross under the leadership of Edward Sorin. Its 1,261-acre campus is recognized for landmarks including the Golden Dome, the Sacred Heart Basilica, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and Notre Dame Stadium, and the university comprises seven schools and colleges enrolling about 13,016 students, making it the eighth-largest Catholic university by enrollment in the United States. It is classified as an R1 doctoral university with very high research activity and holds an endowment of 20.09 billion dollars as of fiscal year 2025.
