FAQs

Is Moscow State University the oldest university in Russia?

Both it and Saint Petersburg State University claim to be Russia's oldest university.

It depends on how continuity is counted. Moscow State University was founded in 1755, when Empress Elizabeth decreed its establishment. Saint Petersburg State University also claims to be Russia's oldest university: it has existed continuously as a university since 1819, and sees itself as the successor of an academy that Peter the Great established by decree in 1724. Each university therefore makes its own claim to be the oldest.
