The University of Glasgow is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland, founded by papal bull in 1451. It is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities, and along with St Andrews, Aberdeen and Edinburgh it took part in the Scottish Enlightenment during the 18th century. Originally educating mainly wealthy students, it became a pioneer of British higher education in the 19th century by also serving the growing urban and commercial middle class, training students for law, medicine, the civil service, teaching and the church as well as science and engineering. Its alumni include the economist Adam Smith, the philosopher Francis Hutcheson, the engineer James Watt, the physicist Lord Kelvin, three prime ministers of the United Kingdom, and eight Nobel Prize laureates in total.

Does the University of Glasgow still have its original founding papal bull?
No. The bull went to France with the chancellor in 1560 and has not come back.
No. The university has been without its original bull since the mid-sixteenth century. In 1560, during the political unrest of the Scottish Reformation, the chancellor, Archbishop James Beaton, fled to France and took with him many of the archives and valuables of the cathedral and the university, including the Mace and the Bull. The Mace was sent back in 1590, but the archives were not.
