The University of Coimbra is a public research university in Coimbra, Portugal, chartered by King Denis in 1290 and recognized by Pope Nicholas IV the same year. It is the oldest university in Portugal and one of the world's oldest in continuous operation, having begun in Lisbon before moving permanently to Coimbra in 1537, and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 for its historic influence, architecture and traditions. Organized into eight faculties and enrolling more than 25,000 students, over 15 percent of them international, it lends its name to the Coimbra Group of European research universities it helped found in 1985; its alumni include Portugal's national poet Luis de Camoes, the mathematician Pedro Nunes, and Nobel laureate Antonio Egas Moniz.
