An individually administered oral assessment of foundational reading skills, including letter recognition, phonemic awareness, oral reading fluency and basic comprehension, developed from 2006 under USAID's EdData II project and now adapted into dozens of languages and used in more than 70 countries, mostly in the developing world, to measure whether early-grade students are acquiring basic literacy. Unlike PISA or TIMSS, EGRA is typically administered to individual children rather than in a classroom group format, and its results have informed national reading reform programs across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
