Social and emotional learning, often abbreviated SEL, is an educational method that aims to foster social and emotional skills within school curricula, giving them the same standing as subjects such as math, science and reading. It emphasizes preparing students to become knowledgeable, responsible and caring members of society by the time they reach adulthood. Its application in public schools has become increasingly controversial since 2020, particularly in the United States, and researchers continue to study its actual impact on school curricula.

What skills do social and emotional learning programs aim to teach?
Five CASEL components: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.
Programs that follow the framework of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) organize social and emotional learning around five components. Self-awareness is knowing your own emotions and building a positive self-concept. Self-management is regulating your emotions and behavior, including intrinsic motivation and setting personal goals. Social awareness is noticing the emotions and social situations of others. Relationship skills are building relationships and communicating within them. Responsible decision-making is solving problems and holding yourself accountable. CASEL also describes methods for putting these into practice at different levels, such as classrooms, schools, families and caregivers, and communities.
