The gurukul system is a traditional model of education from the Indian subcontinent in which a student lived with a teacher, or guru, in the teacher's own household or hermitage for an extended period, receiving instruction, often in Vedic texts, philosophy or a craft, alongside domestic and ritual duties, with no set fee expected beyond what the student could offer on completing their studies. Documented from ancient times, the model declined under colonial-era schooling but survives in some traditional and revivalist religious educational institutions in India today.
