Suggestopedia is a language-teaching method developed by Bulgarian psychiatrist Georgi Lozanov in the 1970s that pairs vocabulary and dialog presentation with background classical music, comfortable seating and a deliberately relaxed classroom atmosphere, on Lozanov's theory that lowering a learner's psychological defenses allows the brain to absorb much larger quantities of new material than conventional instruction assumes possible. Its specific efficiency claims have not held up under later independent testing, though relaxation-oriented techniques drawn from it persist in some contemporary language classrooms.
