Loris Malaguzzi

Loris Malaguzzi was an Italian educator and psychologist who developed the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education together with parents in villages around Reggio Emilia in the years after the Second World War. He earned a degree in pedagogy from the University of Urbino in 1946 and worked through the 1950s as a psychologist at Reggio Emilia's Psycho-Pedagogical Medical Centre, focusing on children with learning difficulties, before building an entirely child-centered municipal preschool system. He argued for recognizing children as capable individuals with rights and their own potential, expressed through what he called a hundred different languages. The Loris Malaguzzi International Centre in Reggio Emilia continues to research and disseminate his approach.
