Education Atlas
Things this atlas does not know. Each entry is a question that specialists
have posed and not settled, recorded with what would actually resolve it and which
expertise the answer needs.
These are kept deliberately, rather than quietly omitted. An atlas that shows
only what it is sure of implies a confidence it has not earned, and the gaps are often where
the interesting work is. Several sit exactly where two fields fail to meet: identifying the
hyssop of the Hebrew Bible needs a botanist and a philologist of Biblical Hebrew, and neither
one settles it alone.
Grouped by the kind of thing the question is about, so you can go straight to the entity type you work on.
Learning Theory and Concepts 11
Multiple Intelligences Theory
Does empirical evidence support Gardner's eight intelligences as independent, measurable abilities?
Open Multiple Intelligences Theory
Why It Is Open Howard Gardner proposed eight distinct intelligences from clinical and developmental observation rather than factor analytic testing. Critics in psychology and psychometrics argue the theory cannot be confirmed or falsified with standard testing methods and that the proposed intelligences do not emerge as statistically independent factors in the data, while the theory keeps wide influence in classroom practice. The dispute is about the evidentiary basis for the model, not about whether people have varied strengths.
What Would Settle It Large factor analytic studies using validated tests for each proposed intelligence, showing the eight domains as statistically independent factors rather than correlated expressions of general intelligence, would settle whether the model is a confirmed scientific taxonomy or an influential but empirically unconfirmed framework.
Expertise Needed Psychometrics and cognitive psychology
Question posed in
Wikipedia, Theory of multiple intelligences, Criticism.
Growth Mindset
Does growth mindset training produce meaningful gains in academic achievement at scale?
Open Growth Mindset
Why It Is Open Carol Dweck's original studies and many smaller trials reported achievement gains from growth mindset interventions, but a 2019 randomized controlled trial run by the Education Endowment Foundation across many schools found no significant increase in numeracy or literacy from the training. Advocates and critics differ on whether the effect is real but small and context dependent, or whether the early results simply do not replicate at scale.
What Would Settle It Additional large, independently run randomized controlled trials across varied school settings, with pre registered outcome measures, would show whether the training's effect on achievement holds up outside the original research team's own studies.
Expertise Needed Educational psychology
Question posed in
Wikipedia: Mindset, Fixed and growth mindsets.
Affective Context Model
When was the affective context model first proposed, and by whom?
Open Affective Context Model
Why It Is Open Multiple education sources describe the affective context model in identical general terms, that memories are encoded and later retrieved through the emotional imprint an experience left, but none of the pages this pass could fetch names the researcher who proposed it or the year it was first described.
What Would Settle It A primary psychology or memory-research source naming the person who proposed the affective context model and the year it was first published.
Question posed in
Learning Theory (Education) (Wikipedia).
Afrocentric Education
In what year did Afrocentric education emerge as a named, distinct pedagogical approach?
Open Afrocentric Education
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia history section traces roots to nineteenth and early twentieth century writers such as Blyden and Woodson, through a consolidation across the 1980s and 1990s associated with Molefi Asante, with no single sentence naming one founding year for the approach itself.
What Would Settle It A source directly naming the year Asante or another scholar first formally named or defined Afrocentric education as a distinct pedagogical approach.
Question posed in
Afrocentric education (Wikipedia).
Age Appropriateness
When did age appropriateness become a defined developmental concept, and who first articulated it?
Open Age Appropriateness
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article describes age appropriateness as a general, socially agreed developmental timetable without attributing the concept to one theorist or naming when it was first articulated as a distinct concept.
What Would Settle It A developmental psychology source naming when the age-appropriateness framework was first formalized and by whom.
Question posed in
Age Appropriateness (Wikipedia).
Age of Acquisition
In what year did researchers introduce age of acquisition as a distinct psycholinguistic variable?
Open Age of Acquisition
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article describes the variable's measurement, theories and effects at length but credits no specific study, article or year with introducing it as a variable distinct from word frequency.
What Would Settle It A citation to the specific study that first proposed measuring word age of acquisition as its own variable.
Expertise Needed psycholinguistics

Alternative Assessment
In what year did alternative assessment emerge as a named alternative to standardized testing?
Open Alternative Assessment
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article describes alternative assessment's forms and practice (portfolios, performances, rubrics) at length but names no founding year or originator for the term or the practice.
What Would Settle It A citation to the specific work that first named or proposed alternative assessment as a distinct practice.
Expertise Needed education
Question posed in
Alternative assessment (Wikipedia), Full article reviewed, no founding date given.
Anti-bias Curriculum
In what year did the anti-bias curriculum approach emerge as a named practice?
Open Anti-bias Curriculum
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article describes the anti-bias curriculum's purpose, examples and criticism at length but names no founding year, article or originator for the approach.
What Would Settle It A citation to the specific work or organization that first named or proposed the anti-bias curriculum as a distinct approach.
Expertise Needed education
Question posed in
Anti-bias curriculum (Wikipedia), Full article reviewed, no founding date given.
Anti-Oppressive Education
In what year did anti-oppressive education emerge as a named framework, as distinct from Kumashiro's 2000 typology of existing perspectives?
Open Anti-Oppressive Education
Why It Is Open The article credits Kumashiro (2000) with organizing four EXISTING perspectives into a typology, which is not the same claim as the framework originating in 2000; no earlier founding date or originator is named either.
What Would Settle It A citation distinguishing when anti-oppressive education as a named framework first appeared from when Kumashiro's typology organized it.
Expertise Needed education
Question posed in
Anti-oppressive education (Wikipedia), Practice section, first paragraph.
Appropriation of Knowledge
What single year, if any, marks the origin of "appropriation of knowledge" as a named educational-psychology concept?
Open Appropriation of Knowledge
Why It Is Open The concept synthesizes Piaget's and Vygotsky's developmental theories with later activity-theory and social-constructivist work (Leontiev, Jenkins); no single coining event or publication date is stated in the standard tertiary literature.
What Would Settle It A primary source (a specific paper or book) that first names and defines "appropriation of knowledge" as a term of art, rather than a general synthesis of prior theory.
Expertise Needed History of educational psychology
Question posed in
Appropriation of knowledge (Wikipedia), Wikipedia, Appropriation of knowledge, whole article.
ASSURE Model
In what year, and by which combination of authors, was the ASSURE instructional design model first published?
Open ASSURE Model
Why It Is Open Secondary sources date the model to 1982, 1993 and 1999 and credit varying combinations of Heinich, Molenda, Russell and Smaldino as authors; a direct fetch of instructionaldesign.org, the most likely primary-adjacent source, returned HTTP 406 (system.BlockedFetch 1169).
What Would Settle It The original edition of Heinich, Molenda, Russell (and later Smaldino)'s Instructional Media and Technologies for Learning, or a citation of it giving the exact first-edition year and author list.
Expertise Needed History of instructional design

Standardized Testing
Does standardized testing improve educational outcomes and accountability, or does it mainly incentivize teaching to the test at the expense of broader learning?
Open Standardized Testing
Why It Is Open Supporters point to the perceived fairness and comparability of uniform testing conditions, while critics document that teaching to the test narrows curriculum and displaces higher-order learning; both effects are documented, but the net effect on genuine learning outcomes, as opposed to test scores themselves, remains contested.
What Would Settle It Long-run studies that isolate standardized-testing regimes from other simultaneous reforms, comparing broader learning and later-life outcomes, not just test scores, between similar systems that do and do not rely heavily on high-stakes standardized testing.
Expertise Needed Education Policy Research
Question posed in
Standardized test (Wikipedia), en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standardized_test, Teaching to the test section.
Institutions and Systems 1
University of Oxford
Is the University of Oxford officially classified public or private on its own Wikipedia infobox?
Open University of Oxford
Why It Is Open Oxford's own live Wikipedia infobox "type" field (confirmed via raw wikitext) lists only "Collegiate research university" and "Ancient university", with no public/private designation, unlike University of Cambridge's infobox which explicitly states "Public collegiate research university". The lead section and a full-article search of Oxford's own page for public-funding language were also checked live and found no citable public/private statement.
What Would Settle It A verbatim statement, from University of Oxford's own Wikipedia article or an equivalent primary institutional source, explicitly classifying it as a public or private university, or a registry decision to source ownership-type for UK ancient universities from a different, explicitly named source class.
Question posed in
University of Oxford (Wikipedia), en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Oxford, infobox type field (absence noted).
Pedagogical Approaches 1
Constructivism
Does Direct Instruction or Discovery Learning Work Better for Novice Learners?
Open Constructivism
Why It Is Open Researchers disagree on how much guidance novice learners need. One line of research holds that minimally guided discovery approaches are less effective for novices than explicit teaching with worked examples, citing cognitive-load evidence; another finds well-designed guided inquiry can still be beneficial, arguing scaffolding quality and task design matter more than the direct-instruction-versus-discovery label itself.
What Would Settle It Comparative studies that isolate the amount and quality of instructional scaffolding, rather than only labelling a method direct instruction or discovery learning, would show whether the disagreement is about guidance itself or about how well each approach is implemented.
