Institutions providing compulsory or near-compulsory schooling below the tertiary level, spanning ISCED levels 1 through 3 (primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education) in the UNESCO International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED 2011). The atlas does not yet distinguish primary from secondary institutions by name alone, since several of its schools such as Summerhill School and Sudbury Valley School serve a mixed compulsory age range by design, so the three levels are grouped together here as one browsing convenience rather than a level by level split; a future wave may separate them once enough named schools exist at each level individually to justify it. Belongs here: any individual school, from a historic English public school such as Eton College to a named alternative or reform school such as Freie Waldorfschule Stuttgart, Summerhill School or Sudbury Valley School, or a generic institution type such as the common school. Does not belong here: early childhood settings (ISCED level 0), universities and other tertiary institutions (ISCED levels 5 and above), or national education systems and international bodies, grouped separately under education governance and system bodies below.
