Advanced Placement (AP) Program

Assessment Practice

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program run by the American College Board that offers standardized courses and examinations in a range of subjects to secondary school students, primarily in the United States and Canada but also at schools internationally. Created in the 1950s, it allows students who perform well on the end-of-course exams to earn college credit or advanced placement at many universities, and it has become a widely used marker of academic rigor on US college applications.
