Bildungsstandards are the national education standards used in Germany, developed by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz, KMK) and introduced from 2003 following Germany's below-average results in the 2000 PISA assessment. They define the competencies students are expected to achieve in core subjects at specific grade levels, providing a common benchmark across the country's sixteen federal states, each of which continues to set its own detailed curriculum (Lehrplan).
