The Esame di Stato, popularly called the maturita, is Italy's state examination marking the end of upper secondary school, typically taken at around age 19. It combines written examinations, including a national test set by the Ministry of Education, with an oral examination before a mixed panel of internal and external examiners, and passing it awards the diploma required for admission to Italian universities.
