FAQs

Why is Brown University called Brown?

It was renamed in 1804 after a $5000 gift from Nicholas Brown Jr.

Brown was founded in 1764 as Rhode Island College. In 1803 its corporation voted that a donation of $5,000, made within a year, would entitle the donor to name the college. In 1804 the college treasurer, Nicholas Brown Jr., committed a gift of five thousand dollars to establish a professorship of oratory and belles lettres, and the corporation voted on the same day that the college be called Brown University.
