Dartmouth College is a private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock and Samson Occom, originally to train Native American Christian missionaries. It is one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution and, with about 6,700 students, is the smallest university in the Ivy League by enrollment. Alongside its undergraduate liberal arts program it houses four professional and graduate schools, the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, and it operates on a distinctive quarter system known as the Dartmouth Plan.

What did the United States Supreme Court decide in the case about Dartmouth College?
The Supreme Court held that the 1816 New Hampshire acts were repugnant to the United States Constitution and reversed the state court.
In Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward, the dispute arose from acts of the New Hampshire legislature passed on June 27 and on December 18 and 26 of 1816, which concerned the college and its trustees. The trustees of the college refused to accept the first of these acts. The Supreme Court held that the acts were repugnant to the Constitution of the United States, found that the judgment on the special verdict ought to have been for the plaintiffs, and reversed the judgment of the New Hampshire state court.
