FAQs

Is KU Leuven the same university as the Université catholique de Louvain?

No. They are two sister universities formed when the bilingual Catholic University of Leuven split in 1968.

No, though they share one origin. Until 1968 there was a single bilingual Catholic University of Leuven. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities led to its split into two sister universities. The Dutch-language university became a fully functioning independent institution in Leuven in 1970, which is KU Leuven. The Université catholique de Louvain left for a newly built campus in the French-speaking part of Belgium.
