Why is Hebrew the language of instruction at the Technion?
The board chose German in 1913, then reversed itself in 1914 and chose Hebrew after the War of the Languages controversy.
The Technion began as the Technikum, planned in the early 1900s by the German-Jewish fund Ezra. In October 1913 its board of trustees chose German as the language of instruction, which set off a major controversy known as the War of the Languages. After opposition from American and Russian Jews, the board reversed itself in February 1914 and chose Hebrew, and the German name Technikum was replaced by the Hebrew name Technion.
