FAQs

Why is the University of Notre Dame also called Notre Dame du Lac?

Father Sorin named the school in French in honor of Our Lady, and the name means the University of Our Lady of the Lake.

The founder, the French priest Edward Sorin, named the school in French in honor of Our Lady, calling it the University of Notre Dame du Lac, which means the University of Our Lady of the Lake. According to the university's own history, Sorin arrived in the snow of November 1842 and took the two lakes on the property to be a single lake. The longer French name is the one Sorin gave the school at its start.
