Berlin Model

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

The Berlin Model, in German the Berliner Modell, is a framework for lesson planning and instructional decision-making developed by the German educationalist Paul Heimann (1901-1967). Heimann also called it the teaching-learning theoretical didactics, distinguishing it from Wolfgang Klafki's more idealistic developmental education theory, which Heimann considered too abstract to guide real classroom decisions. The model is meant to let teachers analyze their own lessons on an empirical, objective basis, giving them a practical and transparent structure for planning instruction rather than a purely theoretical one.

FAQs

What are the six factors in the Berlin Model?

Two conditional factors (participants and their social setting) and four decisional factors (objectives; content; methods; media).

Paul Heimann identified six constant factors of teaching and grouped them in two fields. The field of conditions has two factors: the anthropological and psychological conditions of each participant, and the socio-cultural conditions of everyone involved. The field of decisions has four: intentions or objectives, content, methods or techniques, and resources or media. The model treats the six as interdependent, so a decision in one field has consequences in all the others, and a teacher planning a lesson can start from any of them.
