Microteaching

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

Microteaching is a technique for training and developing teachers in which an instructor reviews a recording of their own short teaching session to get constructive feedback from peers or students on what worked and what could improve. Dwight W. Allen invented the method at Stanford University in 1963, and it has since been used to develop educators across many kinds of teaching. In the original process, a teacher prepares roughly a twenty minute lesson for a small group, records it on video, and then reviews the recording together with colleagues, a master teacher and the students against the teacher's own objectives; a review of the evidence by John Hattie's visible learning project found it the sixth most effective method for improving student outcomes. FAQs

What does a microteaching session involve?

A short recorded lesson for a small group that the teacher then reviews with colleagues and students.

In the original process a teacher prepared a short lesson, usually about 20 minutes, for a small group of learners and it was recorded on video. Afterwards the teacher, colleagues, a master teacher and the students watched the recording together and commented on it against the teacher's teaching objectives. In the later training procedure the class size, time, task and content are scaled down: a supervisor demonstrates the skill, the trainees prepare a lesson of five to ten minutes, and they then practice in a ten-minute session with five to ten pupils.
