Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

Technological pedagogical content knowledge, usually known by the acronym TPACK, is a framework describing the knowledge teachers need to integrate technology effectively into their teaching, built around three core kinds of knowledge, content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and technological knowledge, and the ways those three overlap and interact. The researchers Punya Mishra and Matthew Koehler developed the framework after five years of experimental work studying how teachers come to use technology meaningfully in the classroom, introducing an earlier version called TPCK in 2008 before renaming it TPACK. At the center of the framework sits TPACK itself, the integrated understanding that lets a teacher decide how to represent a given piece of content, using a given pedagogical approach, with the right technology for that specific context, and the framework also names contextual knowledge, covering factors such as school policy and available resources, as a further consideration Mishra proposed adding in 2019. TPACK is now widely used to guide teacher preparation programs, professional development and research into how technology is actually integrated into classroom teaching. FAQs

Which kinds of knowledge overlap in the TPACK framework?

Pedagogical content, technological content and technological pedagogical knowledge, with TPACK at the center of all three.

TPACK divides a teacher's knowledge into content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and technological knowledge. Where two of these meet, the framework names more specific forms: pedagogical content knowledge, technological content knowledge and technological pedagogical knowledge. Technological pedagogical content knowledge itself sits at the intersection of all three, and contextual knowledge covers information apart from them, such as an awareness of school policies.
