Katharine Drexel

Institutional Founders and System Builders

Katharine Drexel, born Catherine Mary Drexel on November 26, 1858, and died on March 3, 1955, was an American Catholic religious sister and educator. In 1891 she founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious congregation whose work served Black and Indigenous Americans. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, and she was the second person born in the United States to be declared a saint and the first who was born a United States citizen. The English Wikipedia lead describes her as an educator as well as a religious sister; further detail on her schools and their history is left to deeper sources.
