Networked Learning

Social and Sociocultural Learning Theories

Networked learning is a process of developing and maintaining connections with people and information, and communicating in ways that support one another's learning, treating learning as taking place in relation both to other people and to learning resources. The concept has no single originator, drawing on strands including Ivan Illich's 1971 idea of learning webs in Deschooling Society and the Lancaster University research group CSALT's definition from the 1990s and 2000s emphasizing how technology connects learners, tutors and resources. It predates, and is related to but distinct from, the connectivism George Siemens formulated as a comprehensive learning theory for the digital age in 2005.

FAQs

How is networked learning related to connectivism?

Connectivism is a 2005 theory proposed by George Siemens to explain learning in networks; networked learning is the wider practice.

Connectivism is a learning theory that George Siemens set out in a 2005 paper called Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age. He argued that a new theory was needed to capture the process of networked knowledge creation and learning. Networked learning is the wider practice of building and maintaining connections between learners, other people and learning resources, and connectivism is one theory offered to explain learning of that kind.
