Curriculum for Excellence

State Standards Initiative

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) is the national curriculum framework for schools in Scotland, covering ages 3 to 18, introduced from 2010 following a review begun in 2004. It is organized around four capacities that education aims to develop in young people, successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors, and structures learning into broad curricular areas rather than the more prescriptive subject-by-subject approach used elsewhere in the UK.

FAQs

How is a pupil's progress judged under Curriculum for Excellence?

By teacher professional judgement, supported since August 2016 by national benchmarks.

Achievement of a level is expected to rest on teacher professional judgement, informed by a wide range of evidence rather than a single test. To support that judgement, Education Scotland produced benchmarks in August 2016 to make clear the national standards expected within each curriculum area at each level, from Early Level to Fourth Level.
