National Curriculum for England

State Standards Initiative

The National Curriculum is the set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools in England so that children learn the same core knowledge, first introduced by the Education Reform Act 1988 under the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher. It sets out programmes of study and attainment targets for core and foundation subjects at each key stage, and while state-funded schools generally must teach it, academies and free schools have greater freedom over their own curriculum content.
